VP2637 2019-05-03

Roots O'Clock

VPALSRR50201 2019-06-14

What time is it? – For the vocal trio Emeterians, it’s Roots O’Clock!

Their sixth studio album is out this summer and features great international artists such as Clinton Fearon (singer in original Gladiators and Studio One veteran musician), Luciano (aka The Messenjah, born Jephter McClymont), Ky-Mani Marley (son of Bob Marley with Anita Belnavis), Saritah (born Sarah Louise Newman, Australian-based, Korean born singer-songwriter), Tiano Bless (reggae singer from Chile) and has 12 top tracks recorded in between Spain (Oktopus Studios Madrid & Vibe Tree studios), England (Stingray Big House studio), all mixed & produced by Dillie Stingray and the Emeterians in the UK, mastered by Mike Caplan (at Lion & Fox) in the USA. The album was recorded with great musicians such as the Forward Ever Band, the Jazzwad Riddim Riddimz, Mafia & Fluxy and the artwork created by Pablo Rakka & the Emeterians.

Here’s a trailer to get the vibe for this vocal trio at Stingray Records studio:

With two major singles already released earlier this year (Fly With Me feat Clinton Fearon & Babylon Bridge feat Ky-Mani Marley), the vocal trio from Madrid, Spain, strike back with a proper roots album. From songs like River Flow, a deep roots anthem with a late 70’s feeling to songs like Roots Reggae Party with an 80’s kind of vibe and sound. Their positive and conscious message is delivered fully trough out the album with songs like Hero, describing ordinary hardworking people: everyday heroes… or songs like Country Life, remarking and paying tribute to Mother Nature. Songs like Respect also have a deep message, in this case with the great featuring Saritah, in duo with Sistah Maryjane, demanding respect for all women. It is amazing how three different languages can be combined and it clearly shows how Reggae Music spread from Jamaica to the whole World… On Roots O’Clock you can find most songs in English, a song in Spanish, covering Osvaldo Farrés anthem Quizás, originally from 1947. A great interpretation by MaryJane Emeterians, perfect harmonies from Maga Lion and Brother Wildman, over a Stingray production featuring Spanish fellow musicians Javier Martín Boix on the guitar and Marcos Crespo on trombone. It’ s been long since their first studio album Seeds that they released a song in Portuguese… Casa featuring Tiano Bless is an original roots song. Catchy chorus and strong vocals by Tiano & Maga Lion, a great combination.

Emeterians are the roots reggae harmoney vocal trio comprising Sister MaryJane, Brother Wildman and Maga Lion.

Fly With Me feat. Clinton Fearon:
Babylon Bridge feat. Ky-Mani Marley (Lyric Video):

Barrington Levy & Trinity
Lose Respect (Extended Version)

GRED27 2019-05-03

First time re-issue for this golden age righteous rastaman business from Barrington Levy & Trinity. In the rockers era Trinity cemented his place as the number one deejay scoring countless hits and becoming almost an almost essential ingredient on the onslaught of discomixes from yard. Moving into production with his own Flag Man label this 1979 crucial combination killer with Barrington „Lose Respect“ was also the first in a long parade of Mr. Levys 12-inch single hits for Greensleeves Records. The flipside features the soulful lovers rock lick of „Since You Are Gone“ / „Give Love A Try“ from Roman Stewart & Trinity to rival the previous and much loved versions by Delroy Wilson, Pat Kelly & David Isaacs.

Trinity (real name: Wade Brammer) is the Jamaican deejay, and the elder brother of Clint Eastwood (alias Robert Brammer). He started his career on several sound systems in Kingstons and recordings followed for producer Joseph Hoo Kim, Yabby You, Winston Riley, Tommy Cowan and Joe Gibbs, with whom he realised his most known tune Three Piece Suit (which prompted an answer record and huge hit from Althea & Donna using the same riddim Uptown Top Ranking).

From Paris to Lisbon to London. FloFilz’ third album for Melting Pot Music is deeply inspired by the UK jazz and hip-hop scene. “Transit” features collaborations with Alfa Mist, Barney Artist, Biig Piig and K, Le Maestro. FloFilz last album Cenario was released in 2016. It sold 3.000 LPs and acummulated 27 million streams so far.

“Transit” will be available digital and on LP (limited gatefold edition includes a 20-page photo booklet by Robert Winter).

“Jazz (We’ve Got)” was the title of the second single from A Tribe Called Quest’s iconic album “The Low End Theory”. It was released in 1991, the same year FloFilz was born. Similar to Tribe FloFilz resurrects jazz for a new generation. He has been doing this for a while now and is pretty good at it, as you might know if you are familiar with his previous works “Metronom” and “Cenário”.
In 2019 things have changed. Today jazz is not only about diggin’ old records and learning about Bird and Trane. Jazz is very much alive and the city of London has become one of its epicenters. The UK jazz scene is happening because it is deeply connected with hip-hop, soul and club music. A perfect setting for FloFilz. Over the last 18 months, he has collected serious Eurostar miles, heading from Aachen to London – going to gigs, hanging out with musical allies and recording new material.
This is why he calls his new album “Transit”. Through 18 tracks FloFilz translates the current London vibe in his very own style and fashion and I dare to say that “Transit” may be the best album he has treated us with so far.

German producers Shuko and The Breed announce joint Westcoast Album Dippin’

The collaboration between producers Shuko and The Breed was love at first sight. Thanks to their preference for classic Westcoast sound, they immediately found a common denominator and harmonized excellently during the production. The result is the album Dippin’, based on the song with the same name by Westcoast legend King Tee, who besides MC Eiht and Benny Sings is also the only rap feature on the instrumental hiphop album. After the song Life in Los Angeles with the Westcoast legends, the tune Cali Sunshine has officially announced the joint record of the producers, which is available on black gold in addition to the digital release at June 5. Exclusively at HHV you get a bundle with a snapback cap in a matching look.

The Breed and Shuko can already look back on a number of prominent productions in Germany and the world. The Breed was mainly responsible for the style-defining sound of Alles or Nix Records and is now mainly the house producer of Plusmacher, but has also built beats for famous German rappers like Olexesh, Haftbefehl or Marteria. Shuko is known in Germany as a producer for Casper, Cro, Farid Bang or Kollegah. Internationally he could already place beats on releases of Cypress Hill, Evidence, The Clipse, Lil Wayne or Nipsey Hussle. But besides their productions for rappers and singers they have always concentrated on their solo careers. Both are very successful in the field of instrumental HipHop and can boast impressive figures in the millions on Spotify. But what unites the two is their love for the Westcoast sound of the 90s. Therefore, they have now joined forces for a project on which they pay homage to classical G-funk, but also create a new modern version of this genre. This album is a tribute to the city of angels and its style-defining sound. The instrumental bangers fit perfectly into the summer and are the perfect soundtrack for sun, beer and BBQ.

Born in Tel Aviv to a family with Moroccan roots, the now Berlin based artist and producer J.Lamotta returns with ‘Suzume’, her second album release via Jakarta Records.
The first single ‘Turning’, taken from the forthcoming album is due for release with an accompanying music video on Friday, 15th February.

‘Suzume’ was recorded across four different studios in Berlin, involving 24 musicians from all around the globe. In contrast to 2017’s ‘Conscious Tree’ album, which was made using found sounds and samplers, the new album sees J.Lamotta expanding her production repertoire by crafting a warm body of sound, laced with live strings and a horn section provided by her band which have toured together from Berlin to South Korea and Japan over the past three years.

On the featured single ‘Turning’, J.Lamotta comments:
‘Turning’ is storytelling. In my mind, the song is a camera that takes in first a wider perspective of humanity and existence, and then zooms in on my personal world, feelings, and love story.

This open and honest approach has roots that can be traced back to Bill Withers, Sun Ra and Dilla, with the triumph of ‘Suzume’ being it’s beautiful evolution of the neo-soul sound.

‘Suzume’ will be released on vinyl, CD and digital formats in April 2019 via Jakarta Records and features artwork created by Simone Cihlar (Anderson .Paak, Tom Misch and more).

A Journey To You (LP+MP3)

The Swiss musician Kevin Wettstein has been continuously releasing music since 8 years under the alias «Melodiesinfonie». Besides putting out numerous EPs and two solo albums he is a relentless live performer. With his third album «A Journey To You» (April 26th 2019, Jakarta Records) he ventures into unknown territories. While his previous releases can be attributed to Hip Hop and beat making, «A Journey To You» retraces Melodiesinfonie’s musical path in the realm of jazz and soul. Long improvisations and playful instrumental passages become decisive style elements that let you dive into sonic landscapes that sound a lot more like a west coast band than a product of Swiss home style studio production. The constant search for new ideas, approaches and concepts, in life as in music, is not at all an arbitrary side effect but a desirable objective of the young musician. Albeit the musical reorientation there is a common thread through out his music: Songs that spread positive vibes and bring people together. «Spread Love» is his music in its essence. For him the human being is a small component in a blooming reality that transcends time and space: music is a spiritual language that lets the individual connect with this transcendence. Musically and philosophically he is way more than your average beat maker. Born 1993 in Bülach, he began playing the drums when he was 12 years old, which triggered a long lasting fascination for rhythms and grooves. Inspired by his peers like J Dilla, Pete Rock and Mndsgn he started sampling and experimenting with electronic sounds when he was 17. His first release followed one year after his initial experiments on the Los Angeles based label Soulection. He released his first both albums «Friede Freude» (Boyoom Connective, 2014) and «Be Thankful» (Boyoom Connective, 2016). After over 150 concerts as «Melodiesinfonie» he will tour Europe with his new album «A Journey To You» with a new band 4 piece band for the first time, playing the drums himself. Many of the 12 album titles will be broken open for long improvisations.

The Mystery Lights
Too Much Tension!

WCK004CD 2019-05-10

The Mystery Lights 2nd outing on Daptone’s rock subsidiary, Wick, sees them digging deeper into their cavern of influences, taking on tips from Suicide, The Kinks and Television as they look to build on their already party fuelled, raucous sound.

The Mystery Lights story begins in 2004 in the small town of Salinas California when friends Michael Brandon and Luis Alfonso -whose shared fondness for groups like The Mc5, Velvet Underground, Dead Moon, and The Fall (just to name a few) -decided to join forces and craft their own brand of unhinged rock and roll. From there they spent the better part of 10 years touring relentlessly before migrating to Queens, New York in 2014.

With a live show known for its raw, visceral energy and relentless assault –leaving little to no stoppage between songs –they barreled through countless NYC haunts and DIY venues, quickly amassing a fervent local following. The buzz soon caught the attention of Daptone Records execs who were in the beginning stages of launching a new rock-centric imprint, Wick Records. Impressed by the groups’ musicianship, groove, endless supply of energy, and understanding of musical history the Mystery Lights were quickly signed to Wick. Though a rock band at heart, the parallels to what Daptone Records had traditionally looked for in their Soul artists was undeniable. Soon sessions were booked with Producer/Engineer Wayne Gordon, and the release of their debut single “Too Many Girls” b/w “Too Tough to Bear” launched to mass critical fanfare.

Upon the release of their self-titled full-length on June 24th 2016 The Mystery Lights were quickly crowned “one of New York’s finest garage rock bands” by NME. Extensive touring, including multiple stops in Europe, Asia and Australia followed which found the group graduating from support slots at hole-in-the-wall clubs to headlining stages at major festivals worldwide.

After two years of break-neck, non-stop touring, the group settled back into Queens to prepare for their second full-length record, Too Much Tension(out May 2019). With Wayne Gordon in the producer’s chair and several intense writing sessions under their belt the group were back at Daptone’s House of Soul and ready to track. While keeping the hard-hitting approach of the first LP, Too Much Tension finds the group digging deeper into their well of eclectic influences, enriching their sound without echoing the past. Mixing the eerie, insistent synth sounds of groups like The Normal and Suicide, the energy and swagger of punk’s golden age, the pop sensibility of The Kinks, and the stark, deliberate execution of Television -The Mystery Lights are taking their idiosyncratic brand of rock and roll to dizzying new heights.

Atlantic Oscillations

TRUCD370 2019-06-21

‘Atlantic Oscillations’ (out June 21st 2019) marks the return of world-renowned British producer Quantic with his most cohesive and intricate album to date. Bringing together new players and concepts with a dance orientated sound that has enchanted fans and tastemakers across the world for nearly two decades, it showcases Will “Quantic” Holland’s artistry and rare ability to intertwine the electronic with the orchestral.

Embracing his own love of albums that travel, taking the listener on twists and turns, with the loss of the album narrative that has occurred in this day of streaming, Holland utilises the space created to explore more creativity as a producer. As he admits, “on the whole, the common theme on this record is that it is probably more intricate and arranged than previous records. I spent three times as long as any other Quantic record and spent a lot of time in the detail”. This meticulous attitude is apparent throughout; each track has been crafted to draw the listener’s attention, with elements of both musical originality and a sense of modernity

Jambú - e os míticos sons da amazônia

AACD088 2019-06-21

The city of Belém, in the Northern state of Pará in Brazil, has long been a hotbed of culture and musical innovation. Enveloped by the mystical wonder of the Amazonian forest and overlooking the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, Belém consists of a diverse culture as vibrant and broad as the Amazon itself. Amerindians, Europeans, Africans – and the myriad combinations between these people – would mingle, and ingeniously pioneer musical genres such as Carimbó, Samba-De-Cacete, Siriá, Bois-Bumbás and bambiá. Although left in the margins of history, these exotic and mysteriously different sounds would thrive in a parallel universe of their own.

I didn’t even know of the existence of that universe until an Australian DJ and producer by the name of Carlo Xavier dragged me deep into this whole new musical world. Ant it all began in Belém do Pará. Perched on a peninsula between the Bay of Guajará and the Guamá river, sculpted by water into ports, small deltas and peripheral areas, Belém had connected city dwellers with those deeper within the forest providing fertile ground for the development of a popular culture mirroring the mighty waters surrounding it. Through the continuous flow of culture, language and tradition, various rhythms were gathered here and transformed into new musical forms that were simultaneously traditional and modern.

Historically marginalized African religions like Umbanda, Candomblé and the Tambor de Mina, which had reached this side of the Atlantic through slaves from West Africa – especially from the Kingdom of Dahomey, currently the Republic of Benin – left an indelible stamp on the identity of Pará´s music. They would give birth to Lundun, Banguê and Carimbó, styles later modernised by Verequete, Orlando Pereira, Mestre Cupijó and Pinduca to great effect. The success of these pioneers would create a solid foundation for a myriad of modern bands in urban areas.

Known as the “Caribbean Port,” Belem had been receiving signal from radio stations from Colombia, Surinam, Guyana and the Caribbean islands – notably Cuba and the Dominican republic – since the 1940s. By the early 1960s, Disc jockeys breathlessly exchanged Caribbean records to add these frenetic, island sounds to liven up revelers. The competition was fierce as to who would be the first to bring unheard hits from these countries. The craze eventually reached local bands’ repertoires, and Belém’s suburbs got overtaken by merengue, leading to the creation of modern sounds such as Lambada and Guitarrada.

To reach a larger audience, the music needed to be broadcast. Radios began targeting the taste of mainstream audiences and played music known as “music for masses.” As the demand for this music grew, it led to the establishment of recording companies. Belém’s infant recording industry began when Rauland Belém Som Ltd was founded in the 1970s. It boosted a radio station, a recording studio, a music label and had a deep roster of popular artists across the carimbó, siriá, bolero and Brega genres.

Another important aspect in understanding how the musical tradition spread in Belém, are the aparelhagem sonora: the sound system culture of Pará. Beginning as simple gramophones connected to loudspeakers tied to light posts or trees, these sound systems livened up neighbourhood parties and family gatherings. The equipment evolved from amateur models into sophisticated versions, perfected over time through the wisdom of handymen. Today’s aparelhagens draw immense crowds, packing clubs with thousands of revelers in Belém’s peripheral neighbourhoods or inland towns in Pará.

The history of “Jambú e Os Míticos Sons Da Amazônia” is the history of an entire city in its full glory. With bustling night clubs providing the best sound systems and erotic live shows, gossip about the whereabouts of legendary bands, singers turned into movie stars, supreme craftiness, and the creativity of a class of musicians that didn’t hesitate to take a gamble, Jambú is an exhilarating, cinematic ride into the beauty and heart of what makes Pará’s little corner of the Amazon tick. The hip swaying, frantic percussion and big band brass of the mixture of carimbó with siriá, the mystical melodies of Amazonian drums, the hypnotizing cadence of the choirs, and the deep, musical reverence to Afro-Brazilian religions, provided the soundtrack for sweltering nights in the city’s club district.

The music and tales found in Jambú are stories of resilience, triumph against all odds, and, most importantly, of a city in the borders of the Amazon who has always known how to throw a damn good party.

“Jambú is a plant widely used in Amazonian and Paraense cuisine. Known for having an appetitestimulating effect, it is added to various dishes and salads but is most famously one of the main ingredients in Tucupi and Tacacá, two delicacies that have been immortalized in countless Carimbó songs. Chewing the leaves of the Jambú plant will leave a strong sensation of tingling on the tongue and lips. Indigenous communities have relied upon its anaesthetic qualities for centuries as an effective remedy against toothaches and as a cure for mouth and throat infections. A decade ago, a distillery from Belém discovered the euphoric effects of the Jambú plant when combined with distilled sugarcane based spirit – known as cachaça – and created the now legendary “Cachaça de Jambú“.

25 Compost Records (10x12'' Box-Set)

CPT544-1 2019-05-24

25 years Compost Records. Wow! For many people, the record label is rated among the best German independent labels for club music, and it specifically belongs to the leading labels for house, future jazz and downbeat.

This box-set serves as proof of that achievement: Dozens of producers, DJs, label owners and companions sent us their thoughts, dedications and quotes.

In fact, Compost is known worldwide for being the pioneer of the future jazz genre. The very successful and highly acclaimed compilation-series like “Future Sounds Of Jazz”, “Glücklich”, “Elaste” or “Party Keller” are still timeless highlights.

For the 20 years anniversary we published a book – five years later, we put the music into focus even more again: The idea was to ask esteemed artists to reinterpret their favorite Compost tunes. So we are excited about getting both talented young artists and many of our all-time favorite producers involved in this project. Alongside the remixes and sold out vinyl label-classics, there are a few exclusive tracks in this strongly limited, hand numbered 10×12′’ box. In addition, you can explore the impressive label history and background stories in the liner notes written by Michael Reinboth himself. On top of this, the anniversary box includes some Compost-gimmicks, a download code (for all vinyl tracks and some bonus ones) and a mixtape by each Michael Reinboth and Thomas Herb.

strictly limited, hand-numbered BOX-SET: 10 × 12” + 2 x mix tapes + Compost logo metal pin + jute bag + stickerpack + linernotes

“Compost has been a staple in the development of the music of my prime. Creating a world of new depths in electronic, soul, jazz and every other genre you can think of. I’m looking forward to another 25 years of beautiful music from the Compost family.” –
Osunlade (Yoruba Records, Yoruba Soul)

“Since checking for the Beanfield and Fauna Flash 12s in the 90s, we’ve always enjoyed Compost and it’s great to see a comrade independent label still going strong. Keep rocking for the next 25!” – Coldcut (Ninja Tune)
