Als vor 25 Jahren die ersten freien Wahlen 1994 in Südafrika stattfanden, wurde Nelson Mandela (Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 18.07.1918 – 05.12.2013) zum Präsident gewählt. Als Symbolfigur des Widerstandes der schwarzen Bevölkerung gegen das weiße Rassentrennungsregime, hatte er sich als Politiker und Bürgerrechtler engagiert und war aufgrund der Aktivitäten gegen die Apartheidpolitik von 1963 bis 1990 als politischer Gefangener in Haft. In dieser Zeit erfuhr Nelson Mandela eine große Solidarität, ganz speziell aus Jamaika, wo sich zahllose Künstler schon immer inspiriert fühlen, unmenschliche Bedingungen anzuprangern und Freiheits- und Gerechtigkeitskämpfer hochleben zu lassen. As the truth about the inhuman conditions in South African apartheid became commonly known around the world, countless Jamaican artists were inspired to voice their concerns and extol praises on the nation’s most prominent freedom fighter… Nelson Mandela. The musical support for Nelson Mandela and dissent and disgust of the apart-heid system from Jamaica was not only confined to culturally inclined artists who had fought long and hard to assert their “declarations of rights” but also from every corner of reggae music. From velvet voiced vocalists renowned for their romantically inclined love songs to the “rockstone” delivery of dance hall deejays, established veterans and youthful newcomers all came together to address the common cause of South African freedom. Heavyweight Dub Showdown im Shengen Studio Jamaika! 

Der renommierte Künstler Alberto D’Ascola aka Alborosie, Sänger, Songwriter, Deejay, Toningenieur, Produzent und Multiinstrumentalist, trifft auf die legendäre Backing Band The Roots Radics, die von Ende 1979 bis 1983 im Channel One Studio mit Hopeton “Scientist” Brown am Mischpult und den Produzenten Henry “Junjo” Lawes & Linval Thompson den Sound Jamaikas dominierte und zeitlos gute Musik aufnahm. Von Alborosie auf ein mögliches Albumprojekt angesprochen, hat es sich der Mitbegründer und Stellvertreter der Band, der Bassist Errol “Flabba” Holt, nicht nehmen lassen sein Archiv zu sichten und Schätze an schwergewichtigen Riddims, unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen und Rough Mixes ins Shengen Studio zu transferieren, um sie dort, gemeinsam mit Alborosie, für eine Veröffentlichung aufzubereiten. This is speaker shaking drum and bass from the original Roots Radics – pure dub fire – Alborosie meets The Roots Radics at their best in a heavyweight dub showdown!

Available as CD in a 6-panel digisleeve and as LP-Vinyl.

It is Alborosie’s fifth dub project following the strictly dubwise albums Dub Clash (2010), Dub The System (2013), Dub Of Thrones w/King Jammy (2015) and Freedom In Dub (2017).

Albrosie is the singer, songwriter, deejay, engineer, producer and multi-instrumentalist – and contemporary reggae star. Born Alberto D’Ascola in Marsala, Sicily on July 4, 1977, the son of a retired police officer, Alborosie taught himself to play guitar, bass, drums, and piano!

The Roots Radics Band was formed in 1978 by bass player Errol Flabba Holt, guitarist Eric Bingy Bunny Lamont and drummer Lincoln Style Scott. They were joined by a few more musicians over the course of time including guitarist Noel Sowell Bailey, Dwight Pinkney and Steve Golding, keyboard player Wycliffe Steelie Johnson (later a part of Steely & Clevie), Pianist Gladstone Gladdy Anderson, saxophonist Headley Bennett and percussionist Bongo Herman. As a combined force the Roots Radics became a well-respected studio and stage band, which dominated the sound in the late 1970ies and first half of the 1980s. They recorded for several producers including Henry Junjo Lawes, Linval Thompson, Joe Gibbs, Niney The Observer and as well played a crucial part in the evolution of Dub Reggae with a huge amount of their music was mixed by Overton Scientist Brown. The most known artists backed by the Roots Radics, both live and in the studio, include Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs, Israel Vibration, Barrington Levy, Eek-A-Mouse, Johnny Osbourne, Prince Far I, Yellowman and many many more. Style Scott later co-founded Dub Syndicate alongside Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound).

Contradiction (feat. Chronixx) is the latest single from the successful album Unbreakable – Alborosie Meets The Wailers United and the the official music video was released mid november and is currently approaching already over 600k views on the artist’s own YouTube channel. On the 7th of december, Alborosie premiered a ‘making of video’ for the dub version of Contradiction. The music from that live dub recording is now mastered and presented as the exclusive B-side on the 7- inch single which will be released as limited edition, black vinyl with custom label printed in a picture sleeve!

Renown reggae singer Tarrus Riley is back on VP Records with his new single Guess Who? which features Mykal Rose (alias Michael Rose) of the legendary group Black Uhuru who originally released their hit Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner in 1979 (titled after the famous 1967 movie with Sidney Pottier). The re-imagined version by Tarrus Riley brings a fresh modern twist to the classic song, Roots with a little pepper Tarrus says about the single, and sees finally the day of light as 7-inch vinyl single in a limited picture sleeve edition including an exclusive dub version on the flipside.
Produced by Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Shane Brown and Dean Fraser, the remake comes at a time when people are taking a stance on political and socio-economical issues more than ever. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a simple way of stating that one is ‘coming for their food’ as Tarrus chants throughout the song. US based Reggae artist Mighty Mystic presents his new album for the territory of continental Europe which focuses on today’s social issues, drawing attention to unity and love, what he feels is most needed universally. Enter The Mystic is his 4th studio album to date, with all previous ones did enter the Top 10 Billboard Reggae charts!

Mighty Mystic (real name Kevin Mark Holness) is considered as one of the leaders in the US Reggae scene and labeled by many as one of the more prolific artists to develop outside of Jamaica. He has gripped the scene with ferocious conviction and an uncanny ambition worthy to be mentioned among the greats. He has gone from being a fan of reggae music to being a contributor to the art.

Mighty Mystic came on the scene in 2006 after scoring his first local hit with the song Riding On The Clouds. However, it wasn’t until the release of his first album Wake Up The World (2010) that he became a household name in the US, which boasted several further standouts like Revolution, “Riding, Original Love, and Slipped Away with appearances from dancehall reggae star Shaggy and modern roots rocker Lutan Fyah.

 Daptone Records is overjoyed to present All My Relations- the debut solo album from long-time Dap-Kings saxophonist, Cochemea Gastelum. Cochemea’s electro-sax leads an ensemble of percussive giants (members of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Antibalas) on a psychedelic, spiritual journey, exploring his ancestral roots through melody and rhythm. As a body of work, it is an acknowledgement of oneness and harmony with all forms of life: people, animals, insects, plants, trees, and even rocks, rivers, mountains and valleys. It celebrates the sublime beauty of existence and beginnings of such. Some of the tunes were drawn from memory, imagined from a time and place Cochemea has never been, such as “Sonora (the home of his Yaqui ancestors), and “Mescalero (an Apache tribe from the South Central region of Mexico – ancestors of his great-grandmother). Others were born from the Musical impression of ritual, like “Mitote (an ancient, secular round dance of the Aztecs and other tribes of the Sierra Madre Occidental – which in certain cultures can be associated with Peyote ritual). The track “Asatoma (The Asatome) is an ancient prayer from India. In Sanskrit, it prays for guidance to grow from darkness to light, to distinguish the real from the unreal, and to be guided from death of the physical to the immortality of the Spirit. It is a celebration of life.

The musicians on the record also bring a piece of themselves and their heritage, creating a cultural cornucopia of sonic expression that allows Cochemea’s vision and spirituality to flourish. All My Relations, in a sense, is a musical prayer to the world to help recognize our one true source, our shared identity. We are one.

Eine neue Popwelle rollt aus Frankreich an – selten gab es so viele interessante Künstler und musikalische Ansätze, die das Genre Chanson mit neuen Impulsen auffrischen. Zu den Bands der Stunde zählt ganz sicher das Pariser Elektropop-Chanson-Duo Hollydays. Es ist nicht die erste Verbindung von elektronischer Musik und Chanson, aber Élise Preys und Sébastien Delage kombinieren beides mit besonders viel Wärme und Seele. Nach mehreren EPs, die in Frankreich bereits für Aufmerksamkeit sorgten, stellen die beiden nun mit „Hollywood Bizarre“ ihr Debütalbum vor.

Élise und Sébastien sind ein Songwriter-Duo, das es versteht Eleganz und Elektronik zu einer wunderbaren Einheit zu verschmelzen. Auf ihrem ersten Album zeigen sie das mit großer Vielfalt: hinter jedem Song verbirgt sich ein anderer prägnanter Popentwurf. Was die Hollydays – der Bandname lehnt sich an die beiden Madonna-Songs „Holiday“ und „Hollywood“ an – so außergewöhnlich macht sind vor allem zwei Faktoren:

Zunächst ist da die modulationsfähige Stimme von Élise Preys. Oft mit melancholischem Unterton, immer sehnsüchtig, sinnlich und ergreifend, erzählt sie Geschichten, die man versteht auch ohne Französich zu sprechen. Einfach durch das Spektrum an Emotionen, das ihr Gesang transportiert – auch und gerade dort, wo Preys die Grenzen ihres Stimmumfang auslotet. Sébastien Delages Instrumentierung der Stücke ist dabei immer so gekonnt dosiert, dass sie die Songs perfekt zur Geltung bringt und sie einrahmt, ohne sie je zu dominieren.

Kein Wunder, dass man sofort an große Duos nicht nur der französischen Popgeschichte denkt: Vergleiche mit Les Rita Mitsouko, Niagara, Everything but the Girl oder den Eurythmics haben ihren Charme, auf einen Stil lassen sich die Hollydays aber nicht festlegen. Das wiederum hat auch mit der Vorgeschichte der Band zu tun: Élise Preys war schon als Teenie Fan von Alicia Keys, Aaliyah und Destiny’s Child. In ihrem Kinderzimmer sang sie die Songs ihrer R&B-Helden nach und schulte so ihren Gesang. Sébastien Delage interessierte sich eher für elektronische Klangkunst von Aphex Twin und Amon Tobin. Die Stimme von Élise kannte Sébastien schon lange, weil er mit ihrem älteren Bruder befreundet war – und wie er heute sagt, war er seit jeher in den Klang dieser Stimme verliebt.

Nach einer Auszeit als Lehrer in England kehrte er nach Frankreich zurück, schnappte sich die inzwischen erwachsene Élise und gründete mit ihr die Hollydays. Das Duo begann mit englischen Texten und Coverversionen französischer Klassiker (MC Solar, Véronique Sanson, Niagara) bevor sie ihren heutigen Textautor Antoine Patinet trafen. Seine Songtexte, oft desillusioniert jedoch nie ohne ein Fünkchen Hoffnung, sind für sie der Kristallisationspunkt ihrer Musik.

Wie aus den scheinbar gegensätzlichen musikalischen Einflüssen der Hollydays eine harmonische Symbiose werden kann, zeigt gleich der Opener, das Titelstück des Albums: Élise, die hier Erst- und Zweitstimme beisteuert, schwebt mit der Eleganz einer R&B-Diva über TripHop-Beats, die von Kid Loco oder Alex Gopher stammen könnten, während die Keyboardflächen dem Ganzen eine – der Titel legt es nahe – cineastische Atmosphäreverleihen. „On a déja“ ist ein packender Popsong über einem energetischen House-Beat, „Léo“ entfaltet mit seinem orientalisch anmutenden Loop einen hypnotischen Sog. Bei der fragilen Ballade „Sensible“ lässt die Musik dem Gesang Élise Preys sehr viel Raum, den sie faszinierend ausfüllt. Die Verbindung eines melancholischen Chansons mit subtilen Melodiebögen und perlender Instrumentierung, die die Dramaturgie des Songs sanft unterstreicht, gelingt nahezu perfekt in „L’odeur des joints“.

Ganz klar: mit den Hollydays geht ein neuer Stern am französischen Pophimmel auf, und doch befinden sich Preys und Delage in gleich mehreren Traditionen. Auf der einen Seite teilen sie die Liebe zum französischen Chanson und zur Poptradition des Hexagons mit anderen Pop-Duos wie etwa Elli & Jacno. Aber auch französische Elektronik-Acts wie Etienne de Crecy, Air und Daft Punk haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Diese Linien verbinden die Hollydays mühelos zu einer Einheit von Song und Sound, die für ein euphorisches Synthiepop-Stück wie „Minuit“ genauso gilt wie für die Club-Anklänge von „Manueta“.

Der Schlusstrack „Monsieur Papa”, die ergreifende Ballade über das Outing eines schwulen Jungen gegenüber seinem Vater, setzt einen emotionalen Schlussakkord an das Ende von „Hollywood Bizarre“.

Nicht ganz allerdings: die deutsche Ausgabe wartet mit einem exklusiven Bonustrack auf, der Neubarbeitung von „Les Insatisfaits”, ihrem ersten kleinen Hit in Frankreich. Viele Hörer kennen das Stück in der Originalversion von der 2018er Compilation „Le Pop 9 – au début”, die neben den Hollydays viele weitere Vertreter der neuen French-Pop-Generation vorstellt.

The crate digging aficionados Marc Hype from Berlin & DJ Suspect from Paris met the first time in real life 2014 at a 45 soundclash on the infamous Le Batofar party boat in Paris, organized by the funky frenchman himself. After the second gig on the same weekend in Lille, a girl from the crowd asked Marc who they were and he quick-fire answered : “The Untouchables“, which became the french version, Les Intouchables, as their moniker straight away. A brotherhood evolved from this point on, led to several tours and finally this compilation right here. Both are playing leading roles in the renaissance of spinning multi-genred 45 records to crowds worldwide. They are members of the 45 Live collective from the UK and the Dusty Donuts DJ Squad, the much celebrated vinyl only label which Marc Hype co-founded the same year. As for this fine compilation, the idea was to show a roundup of typical songs that stays in their record boxes, but to give the listeners the opportunity to listen to them at home, as 7“ records are a typical DJ’s choice and not too comfortable for home listening pleasure, instead of albums. So here we are now, dug out a portion of their crates with all-time favourites and lots of classics from their extended music families too. So sit back ,relax and let yourself go. SOIA’s happy place is Where Magnolia Grows. This is where her paradise lies, where she can bloom and blossom. Adorned with playful melodies, the soundtrack fuses HipHop, R&B, NuSoul and Jazz over saturated and ample beats. The downright lyrics offer deep insights into SOIA’s soul. Together with her producer Mez she revives her musical roots of the nineties. The songs range between sensual soul and expressive contemporary R&B, neatly packed in a shell of electronic synths and keys. Throughout the nine tracks the beats make your head nod while SOIA’s voice makes you close your eyes in delight.

The first track, a boom bap tune called RUN WITH WOLVES, gently introduces you to the album. In her paradise world she runs from nothing and determines her own pace. SOIA’s high-pitched vocals are a deliberate alienation, a stylistic break from her two predecessor albums, which she also uses in HOE FOR LOVE and LOOMING STORM.

VACANT PARADISE employs deep 808 kick drums and rolling hi-hats. In PAY FOR PIZZA, SOIA not only shows her love for HipHop, but also urges everyone to pay for their bills them damn selves.

Released on Beat Art Department, a new sub-label of the well-renowned Munich-based record label Compost Records, WHERE MAGNOLIA GROWS is SOIA’s third solo album. Her two previous albums MOOD SWINGS and H.I.O.P. were published by the Philadelphia-based label Record Breakin’ Music.

Her pre-productions have been nominated for the Austrian music award Amadeus twice and enjoy a loyal international fan base. She has appeared live at festivals such as SXSW, Sonic Visions, Electric Spring, Waves Vienna or Popfest Vienna, as well as at numerous club gigs from Cape Town to Vienna. Thanks to NASOM programme (The New Austrian Sound of Music) she is currently on tour with her band of four.

Split album by Joe Corfield and Slim, two of UKs most promising beatmakers. It’s the follow-up to the “KO-OP 1” album by Smoke Trees and Juan Rios on KO-OP, the sub-label and community dedicated to the art of beatmaking founded by reknown hip-hop label Melting Pot Music from Cologne, Germany.

When we started KO-OP in the summer of 2017, little did we knew where this journey would take us to. Ever since we had the pleasure to work with 21 artists from all over the world and have put out almost 80 tracks on lp, tape and digital. Now we are happy to share with you KO-OP 2 – a split album by two of our favourite producers from the UK: Slim and Joe Corfield. Slim is one half of London rap group Summers Sons. The Sons are signed to MPM where they have released two albums (“Undertones” & “Uhuru”). In February 2019 Summers Sons will play their first German tour together with Children of Zeus. Slim has released instrumental cuts on KO-OP, Brownswood and Banoffee Pie, plus a beattape on Yogocop Records. Joe Corfield hails from Birmingham and has released a string of albums via Radio Juicy and Yogocop. He is coming with his very own sound. Futuristic and soulful, with a great ear to detail. It was actually Flofilz’ idea to have them both on one record. “KO-OP 2” will be released on one LP with two individual covers by Rahel Süßkind, a Berlin based artist (and part of Money $ex Records) who is responsible for all KO-OP artwork.

Ta-ku might be the modern day renaissance man. Haven risen to prominence as one of Australia’s most in-demand beatmakers, the Perth-based artist has found himself curator of a rapidly expanding, multi-disciplinary creative empire.

Borne from a late-night sideline to his day job shilling health insurance, Ta-ku’s music has quickly become a global, full-time concern. From early days uploading chopped hip-hop cuts to Soundcloud, the “genre-killer”’s prodigious credits now include ambitious projects like 50 Days For Dilla, high-profile remixes for Flume, Chet Faker, BANKS, Childish Gambino and Justin Timberlake, as well as a clutch of co-writes, production efforts and countless self-releases.

Teaming up with Jakarta Records on the 823 joint label venture, Ta-ku is sharing his now classic ’25 Nights For Nujabes’ project as a digital/vinyl release alongside two completely new Bonus Tracks – both featuring Toronto based producer Matt McWaters. Drawing inspiration from the likes of D’Angelo, James Blake and J Dilla, Matt McWaters fuses modern electronic production with soul and indie undertones. A love for smooth basslines, soulful keys and catchy melodies allows him to carry out his vision with every track.
